The George Eastman Museum is located on the estate of George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film. George Eastman was the founder of Kodak ("Eastman Kodak Company"), which majorly influenced the foundation and economic growth of Rochester. The museum is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The museum also features beautiful gardens on the estate.
The Genesee Brewing Company, founded in Rochester, is an iconic staple of western New York. It is one of the largest and oldest continually operating breweries in the United States. The Brewery features a great selection of traditional and craft beers and also has a beautiful view of the Genesee River and High Falls.
Highland Park is a world-class arboretum and a horticultural treasure, with many botanical collections to enjoy. In particular, it boasts the greatest collection of lilacs in all of North America. Although the annual Rochester Lilac Festival will have ended by the weekend of the wedding, many of the 1200 lilac varieties will still be in bloom.
In addition to the lilacs, the Park boasts a Japanese Maple collection, magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel and andromeda, horse chestnuts, a pinetum, a rock garden with dwarf evergreens, a barberry collection, spring bulbs and wildflowers, and a large number of tree species from all over the world. Highland Park also houses the Lamberton Conservatory, which showcases living collections of plants found in tropical rain forests and desert environments.
The Corning Museum of Glass is about a 1.5 hour drive from the wedding hotel. It is a very popular museum that is dedicated to exploring a single material: glass. The Museum's campus is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of glass, the world’s foremost library on glass, and one of the top glassworking schools in the world. Guests can learn about the science and technology behind innovations in glass through hands-on exhibits in the science and technology gallery, or enjoy live, narrated glassworking demonstrations.
Niagara Falls State Park, about a 1.5 hour drive from the wedding hotel, is the oldest state park in the U.S. (established in 1885). A massive 3,160 tons of water flows over Niagara Falls every second. Four of the five Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie) drain into the Niagara River before emptying into Lake Ontario. These five Great Lakes make up almost one-fifth of the world's fresh water supply.
Niagara Falls can be viewed from both the American and Canadian sides, though many believe the views on the Canadian side are more spectacular. You can easily drive to that side of the falls with a valid passport.
To get a really great view of the falls, consider taking a Maid of the Mist boat tour or Cave of the Winds walking tour.
